INTRODUCTION
Remember the days when the air around racetracks was filled with the smell of braais, cooked brakes, worked clutches, burnt rubber? How about when driver changes, pit stop strategies and fuel tank size determined the running order and smaller capacity car often humbled the world’s best sports cars? We are all on the same page, remembering the legendary 9-Hour and world renowned Springbok Series, which traversed Southern Africa back in the day.
If the memory is a bit faded don’t fret, as South Africa’s leading endurance championship returns to the tracks with the three round ACD Springbok Series blasting off this November. The series, which caters for both historic saloons and sports cars, gets underway at Zwartkops Raceway on 19 November before heading to Kyalami on 3 December. Following a festive season break the final chapter will play out at Killarney on the 4th and 5th of February 2012.
Zwartkops sees a 90 minute Endurance, Kyalami hosts the 9-Hour Retro meeting with a number of sprint events being followed by a 3-Hour and Killarney fans get to see the international lads joining the fray in a 1-hour.
Cars you can expect to see include hulking Ford GT40s and Cobras, Porsche 917, Lola T70 and Chevrons not forgetting of course the more humble, but deceptively quick models like Ford Escort, Cortina, Anglia, Mustang and Capri, Alfa Juniors, Berlina and Guilia, Fiat 131, BMW 2002s, MGB, Marcos, Mercedes-Benz and a host of Datsuns.
